Blood banking

Canine and feline blood banking is a fast growing aspect of veterinary emergency medicine.  Many times during an emergency, the need for blood products arise.  The Veterinary Emergency Hospital started a canine and feline blood bank in 2006 to help fullfill the need for emergency blood products.

Dr. Hanson establised a closed population of stable, privately owned dogs and cats that donate to the blood bank on a rotational basis.  Each donor undergoes extensive testing to make sure they are healthy and disease free.  Our donors are kept on heartworm, flea and tick product all year, as well as being current on yearly vaccinations.   There are multiple blood types in dogs and cats, so our donors have been screened to make sure that they have the correct type of blood to be in the donor program.

Every year the need for blood products grows.   Some of  the situations that arise that call for blood products are trauma, rat poison, bleeding disorders, sepsis, viral infections and many, many more.  If you would like your pet to be involved in our blood bank program or have any questions, please call the Veterinary Emergency Hospital at 977-6200.
